Block of the Month Challenge
Scroll down to see the block requirements for each month.
Marilyn Pond and Jane Haynes, Co-chairs
This challenge is all about showcasing your creativity, sharing ideas and having fun with fellow quilters.
Here’s how it works:
There is a $5.00 fee to join the challenge. The money collected will be the grand prize at the end of the challenge.
Each month we will select 2 different blocks to make. One will be more traditional and the other will be a bit more challenging. You may make one or both of the blocks.
We will tell you the size to make of each of these blocks. The size of the blocks will differ from month to month.
These are the only 2 rules you must follow:
- make the selected blocks
- use the stated sizes
We invite your participation in suggesting blocks you would like to see incorporated in your quilt. We welcome and will consider any and all ideas.
Bring your completed block(s) to guild on the indicated month. We will issue a ticket for each completed block that could win a monthly prize. For example, if you completed both blocks, you will have 2 chances to win the prize.
At the end of the challenge we will draw the winning ticket for the grand prize from all of the previous months’ tickets.
In January 2025 we will have a workshop on how to put the blocks together to create your own unique quilt.
We look forward to working with you with this challenge. Please consider joining us to see what each of us will create.
If you have further questions or ideas you like to share please contact Marilyn Pond or Janet Haynes.

For this month, we chose two fun blocks to challenge your creativity.
Block 1 is the Bento Box with lots of choices. You can make either a 6 or 9 or 12 inch finished block. HINT: for a 6 inch block, cut 1.5" strips; for a 9 inch block, cut 2" strips; and for a 12 inch block, cut 2.5" strips.
Block 2 is a 6 inch finished bird block using any technique you choose.
#7 - DUE OCTOBER 9, 2024
Our blocks for this month are a 9 inch finished maple leaf and a 9 inch finished pumpkin to welcome Fall. You may use any technique you prefer.
We look forward to seeing your Fall blocks! remember all past months' blocks are accepted and you will receive one ticket for the current month drawing for each block you make.
#8 - DUE NOVEMBER 13, 2024We are getting close to putting our blocks together. So for this month we are asking for you to look at the blocks you have already made and consider how you may want to put the blocks together and what size of project you want it to be.
This month’s blocks are entirely your choice. You may decide to make more of one of the past months’ blocks or even make a favorite block of yours that we have not included in the past months. We do recommend that you stay with the finished sizes of 6, 9 or 12 inch blocks. Also consider making smaller blocks (3 or 6 inch) to use as filler blocks. The possibilities are endless!
We will be accepting blocks at the November, December and January guild meetings. As always each block you make will earn you a chance to get that month’s prize.
We will meet January 9, 2025, at the Driftwood Mobile Home Park on Beach Blvd. in Westminster to put our creations together. We will have further instructions next month. We would like to extend special thanks to Maritza Borbon for securing this facility for us.
