June 11, 2025
Our June speaker is Kim Brownell. She will also lead our June 12 workshop, "From Orphan to Art." She has some unique and creative ideas for using up your unused blocks!
Kim has been quilting since 1993, and has received awards and recognitions for herquilts in various shows and the California State Fair. She was chosen as the "Featured Artist" in the River City Quilters' Guild 2018 show, "Window of Imagination," because of her creativity as a quilter. She calls herself the "Wackydoodle Quilter," due to a style that is easy-going and whimsical. Kim does not always follow the rules and has been known to ignore the "Quilting Police.”
Her goal is to inspire you to have fun and learn what you can create. She started having workshops in 2010 in order to teach others to quilt in a fun way. Her quilts gravitate towards animals, nature scenes and bright colors. She uses many techniques such as fabric collage, free form, and raw-edge appliques, to name a few. She enjoys quilt challenges whichshe says spark imagination and serve as an inspiration to her.
At the Meeting
Orange Grove Quilters Guild is one of the few Southern California quilt guilds with daytime meetings. About 100 of us gather on the second Wednesday of the month to share our quilts and learn more about quilting. This is the typical meeting agenda:
8:30 a.m. Doors open at the Elks lodge. Members help themselves to coffee, tea and light snacks while checking in on friends and the latest Guild activities. This is a good time to turn in blocks for the BOM challenge, browse donated fabric and magazines for sale, sign up for a workshop or pick up a Philanthropy project to work on at home.
9:30 a.m. The Guild President opens the meeting and goes over the latest news. Committee chairs make their reports and then it's time for Show and Tell, where members share their quilt creations. More quilts are on display in the parade of Philanthropy quilts that are ready for donation.
After a short break, it's time for learning. The Guild hosts a variety of speakers throughout the year. Typically, the instructor for that month's workshop will be the featured speaker.
11:30 a.m. The meeting adjourns. Guild members are welcome to purchase lunch in the Elk's Lodge dining room.
